Chapter 1: BASIC INFORMATION ON CBD OIL

In this chapter, we will provide basic information on CBD, where it comes from and its extraction procedure. Also, we have answered frequently asked questions from new CBD users.

About the Cannabis Plant
Cannabis forms part of a genus of plants known as Cannabaceae wherein there are two principal species, Cannabis Indica and Cannabis Sativa, which are cultivated for use by humans.

The Difference Between Marijuana and Hemp
Marijuana contains a significant proportion of the psychoactive compound THC, otherwise known as delta-9 tetrahydrocannabinol; the compound in marijuana that causes intoxication. For this reason, Marijuana is classified as a Class 1 controlled substance by the United States federal government. However many U.S states have permitted the use of marijuana for either medical and recreational uses.

It is, however, important to understand the differences between Hemp and Marijuana. Although Hemp does contain some cannabinoids, in order to be legally cultivated it must contain less than 0.3% THC. Hemp is completely safe and natural and is grown, primarily, as an industrial crop for use in the textile and building industries. Since Hemp is used for its fibres, it contains relatively small concentrations of cannabinoids and terpenes, making it not the most desirable source of CBD oil.

While a significant number of CBD products available in the market are produced from industrial Hemp, our pure CBD oil at CBD Organics, is produced from a CBD-rich strain known as Phytocannabinoid-Rich or PCR Hemp, which has as much as ten times the concentration of CBD while maintaining negligible amounts of THC and causing no intoxication.

To illustrate this in detail, let’s have a look at the various types of CBD oil products in the market and compare their qualities:

CBD From PCR Hemp vs. CBD From Marijuana
The extraction processes of oil from Hemp and Marijuana are exactly the same. But this is where the similarities end. Cannabis oils, made from Marijuana, might contain some CBD, but are high in THC due to the fact that they are intended to cause intoxication. Therefore, these extracts from Marijuana are deemed illegal and classified as schedule 1 drugs under the Controlled Substances Act.

Raw CBD Oil vs. CBD Concentrate
Upon initial extraction of oils, resulting products are referred to as raw hemp extracts. Upon subjecting these raw hemp extracts to a series of filtration and distillation processes, various classes of oils are produced differing in quality and CBD content. These processes eliminate unwanted compounds such as waxes and chlorophyll resulting in refined oils which are then referred to as CBD concentrates or CBD distillates.

Full Spectrum CBD Oil
Full spectrum oils are generally Raw PCR hemp extracts that contain terpenes and other cannabinoid compounds similar to CBD. Because they retain the natural balance of these substances found in the original plant, they are referred to as ‘full spectrum oils’.

Broad Spectrum CBD Oil
Like Full spectrum CBD oil, Broad spectrum CBD oil retains the original concentrations of cannabinoids and terpenes found in raw PCR hemp extract, but with no trace of THC extracts.

CBD Isolate
CBD isolate is nothing but purified CBD which can be consumed directly or used as an additive in other preparations. In their pure form, these cannabinoids are solid colorless and odorless crystals.

CBD-Rich Oil/Phytocannabinoid-Rich (PCR)
CBD-Rich Oil or Phytocannabinoid-Rich (PCR) oil is CBD oil which has been filtered and distilled to remove unwanted compounds resulting in a higher concentration of CBD than the raw extract.

CBD-Infused Oil
CBD-infused Oil can mean two things. Either it means that the product has been infused with purified CBD isolate or that the product has been infused with a CBD-rich, full spectrum or broad spectrum concentrate. Therefore it’s important to know which of the two the product you are purchasing contains as they both produce different effects. If labeled properly, then the product will specify if it includes “CBD isolate”, meaning not full spectrum or “CBD-rich hemp oil (or extract)” or “full/broad spectrum CBD oil” meaning full spectrum.

A List of CBD Forms/Products
In summation, the following are products that contain varying levels of CBD and other cannabinoids and terpenes:
-
Hemp seed oil — Oil extracted from hemp seeds and contains CBD.
-
Raw industrial hemp extract — Produces low-quality CBD oil.
-
Raw PCR hemp extract — A quality, full or broad spectrum, rich in CBD product and naturally contains cannabinoids and terpenes.
-
CBD distillate or concentrate — A full/broad spectrum purified product from which unwanted compounds have been removed.
-
CBD isolate — Purified CBD devoid of beneficial terpenes and cannabinoids.
-
CBD-rich oil/Phytocannabinoid-rich (PCR) — Full or broad spectrum CBD concentrate or oil.
-
Broad spectrum oil — An oil rich in CBD that has all the beneficial cannabinoids and terpenes except THC.
-
CBD-infused — Primarily products that are infused with pure CBD, or may also refer to a full/broad spectrum product.

Frequently Asked Questions of Beginners
One of the general misconceptions, especially in the media and popular culture, is that marijuana is the same as hemp. Here we will dispel myths and differentiate between what causes intoxication and what doesn’t while also tackling concerns regarding side-effects.

Does CBD Oil Get You High/Stoned/Intoxicated?
No, it doesn’t. If produced properly it will not contain amounts of THC to cause such effects. CBD does not change brain chemistry or alter consciousness the way THC does and may even prevent receptors in the brain from reacting to THC.

What Are the Side Effects of CBD Oil?
CBD works differently for different people depending on various factors including what the desired effect is. Some may use CBD oil to get a good night’s sleep but may also feel drowsy during the day, which is an unwanted side effect.

Will CBD Make Me Drowsy?
While CBD has biphasic properties, in most cases CBD is unlikely to cause drowsiness, except when taken in high doses.

Can I Give My Pet CBD Oil?
High quality CBD is safe for pets depending on the size and activeness of your pet. Please consult a veterinarian before administering CBD in any form, be it treats, CBD oil or tincture oil to your pet.

CHAPTER 2: CBD Oil and Your Health

What exactly Is CBD?
CBD is the shortened, three-letter officially designated term (Not an acronym) of cannabidiol. It is a direct derivative of the hemp plant, which belongs to the same family as the marijuana plant. According to a report statement from the World Health Organization, “In humans, CBD exhibits no effects indicative of any abuse or dependence potential…. To date, there is no evidence of public health related problems associated with the use of pure CBD.”

What Are Cannabinoids?
Cannabinoids are active compounds that account for most of the benefits of cannabis. Cannabinoids found in plants are technically called Phytocannabinoids and are similar to Endocannabinoids, that are produced naturally by all mammals and are crucial to appetite, memory, movement, and pain.

Other cannabinoids essentially present in PCR hemp include cannabichromene (CBC) and cannabigerol (CBG).
Cannabichromene (CBC) is the third most commonly found cannabinoid in cannabis. CBC is non-psychoactive, like CBD.
Cannabigerol (CBG) is generated in the early stage during hemp’s growth cycle. CBC as well as CBG are found to have properties quite similar to those of CBD.

What Do Endocannabinoids Do?
Endocannabinoids, like hormones, are neurotransmitters produced naturally by our bodies. Our nervous system produces these neurotransmitters as a response mechanism to various states of health and environmental factors. These, in turn, interact with cell-receptors found throughout our bodies, instructing them to change/alter their activities.

The Human Endocannabinoid System (ECS)
Let’s have a look at the role cannabinoids play in supporting ‘Homeostasis’ or a state of balance within the human body.
The Human Endocannabinoid System (ECS) functions dually through the endocannabinoid receptors found on the surface of cells throughout the body and by themselves interacting with these receptors. Take for instance, Anandamide, one of the well-known Endocannabinoids. Anandamide is responsible for the production and uptake of Serotonin, often called the “bliss molecule” due to its direct association with one’s mood. The endocannabinoid system is vast and far-reaching and regulates a wide array of bodily functions, from the regulation of appetite to sleep patterns, moods, metabolism, immune response, the lifespan of cells and much more.

List of Common Cannabinoids
Below is a list of the most common cannabinoid molecules found in cannabis:

-
Cannabidiol (CBD) — The second most cannabinoid generated by the cannabis plant that is non-psychotropic in nature (You don’t experience the associated high).
-
Delta(9)-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) — The psychoactive compound present in marijuana that gives users a feeling of ‘high’.
-
Cannabichromene (CBC) — This is the third most abundant cannabinoid, is non-psychoactive, and promotes good mood and healthy joint and muscle function.
-
Cannabinol (CBN) — It enhances joint and muscle health, and also promotes sound sleep.
-
Cannabigerol (CBG) — Non-psychoactive in nature and elevates mood and functioning of joints and muscles.
-
Tetrahydrocannabivarin (THCv) — This has lesser psychoactive properties than THC.
-
Cannabidivarin (CBDv) — Similar effects as CBD.
-
Delta(8) THC — This is similar to delta(9)-THC, less psychoactive in nature than THC and supports relaxation.
-
THCa and CBDa — Component of raw cannabis and non-psychotropic in nature.

What Are Terpenes?
Terpenes are a class of volatile hydrocarbon compounds produced by the cannabis plant among others that readily evaporate at room temperature and are rapidly inhaled by humans. Cannabis is currently the most terpene-dense plant known to us. Used in a wide variety of food and cosmetic products, Terpenes are recognized as safe for human consumption by the Food and Drug Association. Additionally, terpenes act as both a repellent for pests and as attractants for pollinators and seed spreaders. While terpene molecules are all very similar, each has its own unique scent and flavor and combinations of terpenes are responsible for the distinct aromas of cannabis strains.

Terpenes have been used for millennia in what’s commonly known as aromatherapy and can have powerful effects on our senses and bodies. Citrus scents, for instance, are produced primarily by combining limonene and pinene, both of which elevate mood. Other terpenes include linalool, myrcene, caryophyllene, limonene, terpinolene, citronellol and camphene. The traditional uses of these terpenes include support for muscle and joint function, mood and overall wellness. In cannabis, the highest concentrations of terpenes are produced in the plant’s female flowers. They are also known to modify the effects of cannabinoids. Although not as potent as cannabinoids in terms of their overall effects, terpenes are valuable components of cannabis.

The Entourage Effect
The Entourage Effect is an effect produced when cannabinoids and terpenes are combined. They work together to produce a range of effects which is thought to be greater than they would individually. While additional research is required to determine the exact role that terpenes play in the overall effects of CBD oil, it seems clear that terpenes work in tandem with cannabinoids to produce richer effects than CBD would alone.

As mentioned earlier, some CBD oil products are actually oil infused with pure CBD.These products do not have the added benefits of terpenes and other cannabinoids and do not produce the entourage effect. They are not recommended.

Chapter 3: RESEARCH STUDIES ON CBD OIL

History of CBD Oil Research
In 1968, a report published by the UK government’s Advisory Committee on the subject of Drug Dependence stated “the long-term consumption of cannabis in moderate doses produces no harmful effects on humans. Cannabis is not as dangerous as the opiates, barbiturates, amphetamines and alcohol.” Subsequently that year, the University of Mississippi grew marijuana for research after approval from the DEA’s predecessor agency.

After two years, the United States declared that marijuana is a Class I substance which has high potential for abuse and no medicinal value. However, in 1972, a report based on a comprehensive study by the Department of Health, Education and Welfare recommended decriminalization and removal of marijuana from the scheduling system. Then-President Richard Nixon contested the findings and rejected the recommendations.

In 1976, in a lawsuit against the government the federal judgement stated that the plaintiff Robert Randall, was using marijuana out of “medical necessity,” making him the first patient to be allowed to legally use cannabis for medical reasons. As a result of the lawsuit, the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) started supplying cannabis to patients whose doctors were granted the rights for “compassionate use” under Investigational New Drug Applications (IND) rules. Most of the medical research carried out on cannabis has taken place in the last 40 years.

In 1988, human endocannabinoid system was discovered during stages of different experiments. In 1988, the first cannabinoid receptor was found in the brain of a rat. In 1992, the first endocannabinoid was discovered by Raphael Mechoulam, William Devane and Dr. Lumir Hanus. These discoveries set off new waves of research into properties of cannabinoids.

The mechanisms and effects of cannabinoids and the ECS:

CBD As A Mood Stabilizer
CBD is known and often used for emotional stability. Research shows that THC-Free CBD elevates level of endocannabinoid anandamide. Anandamide, produced by the nervous system stimulates the absorption of serotonin in the brain. Serotonin is attributed to as the “happy element” since it helps to improve mood.

When you are not in a good mood or feeling low, it could possibly be due to low level of serotonin in the body. An elevation in serotonin levels can uplift your mood and happiness quotient.

CBD As A Sleep Booster
CBD oil aids relaxation, natural sleep cycles, and overall good health. Taking CBD oil in any form before sleeping helps you wake up feeling fresh and energized the next morning.

Federally Recognized Medical Conditions
Recently, after successful completion of multiple clinical trials at several stages, an FDA panel recommends to approve a THC-Free-CBD-based pharmaceutical called Epidiolex created for the treatment of rare and specific types of juvenile epilepsy.

Latest concession by the federal government is associated with the Department of Veterans Affairs. In June 2018, the Senate Appropriations Committee voted for addition of an amendment to the annual spending bill of Department of Veterans Affairs’ (VA) to prohibit interference of VA regarding participation of U.S. veterans at legal cannabis programs. The amendment prohibits the VA to deny any services to veterans using medical cannabis.

This amendment reverses a VA directive which prevents VA physicians from helping veterans to access medical cannabis. In addition, the amendment directs the VA to conduct in depth research into the effects of medical cannabis using whole plant cannabis and extracts, including CBD oil.

CHAPTER 4: ADMINISTRATION OF CBD OIL

In this chapter, we’ll discuss types of CBD available and how can they be administered.

Bioavailability of THC-Free CBD
The effectiveness of THC-Free CBD depends on various factors such as the method of consumption and the ingredients present in the product, but major deciding factor is the bioavailability of the CBD.

The bioavailability of a compound is the percentage of a given serving that is available for your body to use.
A bioavailability of 100% denotes that 100% of the CBD in the product can be utilised by your body. The only course to acquire 100% bioavailability is by means of intravenous administration — which is by injecting it directly into the bloodstream.

Every other way of consumption results in a certain percentage of the CBD being lost or unavailable to the body for multiple reasons, such as fatty tissue trapping it or metabolization (broken down) before it enters the bloodstream.

Bioavailability of THC-Free CBD Tinctures
A tincture is an oil or alcohol based liquid infused with CBD oil which are taken by mouth. When ingested using through this method, the CBD in the tincture is easily absorbed by the body.
It has been proven that the bioavailability of CBD in tinctures is between 10 to 40%.

Bioavailability of Inhaled THC-Free CBD
Same as intravenous injection, the method of inhalation offers the highest bioavailability. CBD can be inhaled by vaporization or atomization. The vapor is directly absorbed into your lungs in the same was as oxygen. Moreover, inhalation has an immediate effect as the CBD straightaway enters the bloodstream through the lungs without passing through the digestive system. It is It has been proven that the bioavailability of inhaled CBD is in range of 25 to 60%.

How Much Time Does CBD Oil Require To Show Its Effect?
There are multiple determinants to consider how much time a particular method of CBD oil consumption will take to show its effects. Many of these determinants are related to CBD itself, while others depend on how the human body reacts to CBD.

Owing to different genetic makeup, each person reacts to CBD oil in a different way. Furthermore, age, overall-wellness, weight, and metabolism can all affect the time required to show the effects of CBD oil.
Capsules and other edibles take from 20 minutes to over an hour whereas tinctures can take up less than 20 minutes to show the effects of CBD.

Suggestions For A CBD Oil Serving
As with bioavailability and time to take effect, the ideal serving of CBD depends on a variety of factors including the product being taken, amount of CBD present in the product, bioavailability of the CBD product, full spectrum or broad spectrum nature of CBD oil, genetic makeup, sex, weight and so on.

Each of the above-mentioned factors determine your ideal serving. Using lesser amount than required will not deliver the desired effect and will be a complete waste. Alternatively, using more quantity required will not provide additional benefits or work at a faster pace. It will take some experimentation and consultation with a medical professional to determine an ideal serving for a person.

Here are some guidelines for determining an ideal serving of CBD oil for you:

Start With a Low Serving Size
In order to experiment and determine your ideal CBD quantity it’s a good idea to start with a low serving size. You can begin with 1mg of THC-free CBD for every 20 pounds of weight. This way, someone weighing 100 pounds will require to begin with 5 milligrams, while a person weighing more than 200 pounds can begin with 10 milligrams, and so on.

Start Before Bedtime
When first using CBD oil, it’s best to start at night — about an hour before bedtime. That way, if CBD has a tendency to make you drowsy, you’re not dragging during the daytime. It’s uncommon for a low serving size of CBD to cause drowsiness, but it’s good to be sure. If you have no issues, then take another serving in the morning. If CBD oil does make you sleepy, then take it at night. Often CBD oil is used to support both nighttime sleep and daytime focus, in which case it can be taken as needed throughout the day.

Increase Your Serving Size Slowly
If all goes well but you have not achieved your desired results, you can try doubling your servings. Each time you increase your serving size, take a few days to make a note of how your body feels.

If a rise in serving size produces unwanted effects such as making you drowsy, back off to a lower serving.
Once you have arrived at a particular serving based on the product you are using, it’s a good idea to stick with that product.

Ways to Take THC-free CBD Oil:

Lifestyle Aspects
Some CBD products are more convenient to carry than others, while some are simply more enjoyable to use than others.

Utility Aspects
The product for your use will depend on the benefit you’re looking to get out of it. If your purpose to use CBD is for muscle and joint soreness and support, then our topical salve product would be ideal for you. If your intention to use a CBD product is to support and regulate your natural sleep cycle, help with anxiety and reduce inflammation then our BPure Organics’ Softgels or Tinctures will be most beneficial for you.

Bioavailability Aspects
CBD products are not inexpensive like vitamins and minerals supplements. Therefore you should opt for a CBD with maximum bioavailability.

Serving Size Aspects
It’s easier to measure a serving when you’re swallowing capsules, but a bit harder to determine a serving size when using a dropper. Yet you can play with doses with the dropper.

Keeping these aspects in mind, let’s delve deeper into the pros and cons of individual ways of taking pure CBD.

CBD Oils and Tinctures
CBD oil comes in a variety of forms. These can include all the hemp-based substances ranging from raw hemp extract to more processed products to pure CBD-infused oil.

Pros and Cons of CBD Oils and Tinctures
Tinctures are generally taken in the morning and the evening, and can also be used while on the go if your situation permits it.

The downside of tinctures and oils is that they are cumbersome to carry them around.

CBD Oil Capsules
CBD oil capsules are generally administered orally.

Capsule shells are made with gelatin, which completely melts within minutes in your stomach and dispenses the entire serving of CBD oil without letting to get absorbed into the mouth tissues or throat. Moreover, if you take them with food, minute quantity may find its way through the remaining portion of your digestive system towards excretion.

Nano-emulsion
BPure Organics products are formulated employing a proprietary water-soluble nanoemulsion technology which converts the active compounds into nano-sized particles. These smaller sized particles are exponentially more potent with much higher absorption capability into the blood.

Pros and Cons of Capsules
As we mentioned, capsules, because they dissolve quickly, will deliver a serving of CBD directly into your stomach.
Capsules are portable and not mess while consuming it, plus allows for exact serving sizes.
However, the disadvantage of capsules is that they take longer to impart its benefits.
Also capsules that are not manufactured using nanoemulsion technology have much lower bioavailability.

CBD-Infused Topicals
CBD-infused topicals such as skin creams, CBD oils, balms, and salves include numerous beneficial ingredients that boost overall health benefits. For instance, skin creams may contain added moisturizers, collagen, aromatic oils and so on. Pain creams/balms and salves may contain ingredients that help the product to penetrate deeper into tissues and skin to facilitate pain relief or soothe and heal skin.

Pros and Cons of Topicals
Topicals (such as BPure Organics’ CBD Salve) are great for spot treatment such as to soothe an area of skin or the underlying muscles and joints in a particular part.
However, they consume time while being applied and can be messy.

Also, when consumed orally, CBD reaches all the areas of the body, including skin. If overall wellness and skin improvement is your goal, then taking it orally will be a better option rather than applying it topically all over your skin.

CHAPTER 5: BASICS ON STARTING WITH CBD OIL

How To Choose The Right High-Quality CBD
Today, innumerable companies manufacture CBD products. However, many of the companies mislabel their products and are dishonestly selling products that have negligible or no amounts of CBD present in them. What is more dangerous is the synthetic CBD available in the market today.

You should never compromise and thoroughly research about the manufacturer before buying CBD oil based supplements rich in natural CBD and terpenes.

Also, a recent Brightfield Group survey revealed that more than 40% CBD products in the market do not contain the amount of CBD mentioned on the label.

How To Identify a Good Company
Factors that need to be considered before choosing the CBD brand and product include their source and variety or strain of hemp, the method of extraction employed to yield the raw hemp extract, usage and conditions if nanoemulsion technology is involved, and the quality of the other ingredients present in the product.

A reputable company will provide all the product-related information. And genuine products speak for themselves as you will experience its benefits within the stipulated timeline. If a company fails to provide you with all the information, then simply rule them out. There are many respectable, high-quality THC-Free CBD oil manufacturing brands out there.

What Is The Preferred Hemp Source?
Though hemp is produced all over the world, however, the USA produces the finest quality of cannabis and hemp.
It’s important to know that the variant of hemp differs based on its purpose of production. Industrial hemp is primarily produced for its fibers and seeds and is not bred to extract high levels of cannabinoids and terpenes. Whereas, PCR hemp, is specifically grown to be rich in cannabinoids and terpenes. It is best to opt for a company whose products are manufactured with PCR hemp and not industrial hemp. BPure Organics’ CBD products are manufactured using premium-grade PCR hemp only.

Low quality CBD oil products are usually manufactured in Asian countries such as China, as their quality standards are inferior. CBD oil products produced in China are often formulated from industrial hemp strains which are poor in cannabinoids and terpenes. Also, the extraction process employed there is cheaper and harsh which can easily destroy the delicate chemical structure of cannabinoids and terpenes. Contaminants such as molds, biological toxins or toxic pesticides may be present in their products which are strictly illegal in the USA.

Quality of Other Ingredients
Majority of THC-Free PCR CBD oil products contain additional ingredients such as vegetable oils or other therapeutic oils.
The ingredients present in the product can serve as an indicator to determine if a company is trying to provide a budgeted product. Oils such as natural hemp seed oil, organic coconut oil and natural almond oil are beneficial and of high quality. If a product contains chemicals, then that’s not a good sign.

One exception can be medium chain triglycerides (MCT) which is a natural coconut oil product. Coconut oil is made up of both medium- and long-chain triglycerides.

Quality Testing
Third-party lab testing and their reports are critical while determining a product. Genuine CBD manufactures will get their products tested at labs to determine the presence of any contaminants such as THC and to measure the amount of cannabinoids in their product. THC use has serious consequences, so it is very important to find out whether your CBD product contains any THC and in what quantity.

As different strains and crops contain different levels of CBD, therefore CBD oil can largely vary in potency from batch to batch. A reputable brand works diligently to produce products that have almost equal amounts of CBD levels in all their batches.

CBD Oil Claims Related To Health
The health benefits claims from companies manufacturing CBD are not backed by scientific evidence or FDA. Therefore do not fall trap to the exaggerated claims made by a company.

Find a Reputed Manufacturer
Consider all the above methods to determine a genuine THC-Free CBD products manufacturer. Especially look for third-party lab reports or certifications for the products manufactured by a brand. Also we mentioned, products manufactured in regions of the world other than the USA or Western Europe are usually of inferior quality.

Another way to zero down on a company is by doing a little internet research on CBD products and CBD companies.
There might be genuine, small companies which make very premium-quality CBD but may not have too many reviews. Then use the other ways above to determine if they are worth trying.

Dangers of Synthetically Manufactured Cannabinoids
It was reported that some people in Utah became seriously ill after using products with synthetic CBD, which is produced in a lab instead of obtaining it from a hemp plant. Hence, it is necessary to avoid these products at all costs.

CONCLUSION:

Set Goals
In order to determine the effects of CBD, it’s important to set some goals before you start taking CBD oil. For instance, you may be suffering from a sleep disorder, or you may be experiencing discomfort post workout. This will help you make a decision as to whether or not it’s working for you.

Figure Out Your Serving
If you’re taking CBD oil for health benefits, then you may require 25 milligrams or less per day.
However, if you wish to use CBD for a reason other than health support then you will need to discuss with a qualified medical professional who is well-versed with the uses of CBD to decide your ideal serving.

Chapter 6: The History of CBD

Cannabidiol (CBD), a compound present in the cannabis plant, has gained exceptional popularity and acceptance throughout the world. Today, on the basis of support from the Science community CBD oil is widely used in a variety of skin care, and health products, from tinctures to CBD-infused culinary and CBD balms to CBD-infused cosmetics. CBD oil has also become a part of the diet of many pets as it has been proven to improve the overall health of animals.

Identification of CBD Oil
About 25 years ago, nobody had even heard about CBD. Today, modern scientists have recognized a family of elements known as cannabinoids and the human endocannabinoid system.

CBD Oil During Ancient Times
The earliest written document about cannabis and its uses surfaced from ancient China around 6000 B.C., but a clear evidence of cannabis being used for medical purposes appears around 2700 B.C.

In 2737 B.C., as shown in Pen Ts’ao Ching, the Chinese emperor Shen-Nung used cannabis-infused ointments and teas.
With the progress of human civilization, writings indicating benefits of hemp started appearing in pharmacopeias all across Asia.

Around A.D. 77, hemp was extensively used by the Romans in the healing arts. Pliny the Elder, a scholar, claimed cannabis extract helped in relieving discomfort.

In India, cannabis was considered a sacred gift from the gods. The Atharvaveda, essentially a manuscript with complete information regarding everyday life medicines, includes detailed use of cannabis extracts from flowers and seeds in multiple balms and tinctures.

Cannabis has been found in the tombs of Ancient Greeks and Egyptians who had invented formulations for remedies using cannabis.

CBD Oil in the West
There is ample evidence that during the sixteenth century, cannabis was cultivated in all regions of Europe. Hemp was considered extremely valuable to society during that time, therefore Henry VIII urged all farmers to grow hemp.
Many medical practitioners and physicians of those times, including Garcia de Orta and Li Shih-Chen, documented the use of hemp extract as an appetite booster and overall health enhancer.

Around 1600, hemp cultivation became popular in North American colonies to an extent where the colony of Virginia made it lawfully mandatory for farmers to cultivate hemp. Massachusetts and Connecticut also passed similar laws. Hemp seeds were used as legal tender to pay for goods and services in Pennsylvania, Virginia and Maryland.
Robert Burton’s “Anatomy of Melancholy,” a popular medical book, stated hemp extract helps in improving mood.
By the eighteenth century, “The New England Dispensatory” as well as “Edinburgh New Dispensatory,” two highly respected pharmacopeias, listed hemp’s benefits.

The surgeon, W. B. O’Shaughnessy, began to applaud the benefits of hemp in the Southwest America. A Medical College of Calcutta, India professor, O’Shaughnessy, experimented with hemp extracts on animals and humans to see if it cured rheumatic diseases, tetanus cholera, and hydrophobia.

CBD Oil In Modern Age
